Less Maths and Chemistry content than the A Level Biology course, with no plant biology or ecology-based topics – you will only cover Human Biology topics. You will concentrate on developing your knowledge and understanding as well as essential practical and research skills relevant in applied human biology and health science
A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 including Maths, English and Double Science.
The Extended Certificate in Human Biology is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to admission requirements of many relevant applied human biology/ health science courses. This course provides transferable knowledge and skills that will prepare you for progression to university. If you combine it with a Health and Social Care BTEC you could progress to an Occupational Health, Nursing or Midwifery career. If you combine it with a Sport BTEC you could progress to a Sport Science career. If you combine it with A Levels in Psychology and Sociology, for example, you could progress to Nursing
For this part coursework /part exam-based qualification (equivalent to 1 A Level) you will study three mandatory units:
- Unit 1: Principles of Applied Human Biology including cells, tissues and biological molecules, body systems, immune response, genetics and health.
- Unit 2: Practical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
- Unit 3: Human Biology and Health Issues.
You will also study one optional unit: Unit 4: Functional Physiology - designed to support your progression to applied human biology, health and health science higher education courses.
