This course is a work-focused alternative to A Levels and BTECs for anyone wanting a career in the health sector. The course has been designed with 133 leading health and science sector bodies, employers and expert practitioners to produce a qualification that will prepare you for work or further study in the sector.
What is unique about this type of programme?
The course includes a compulsory 9 week industrial placement (which is about 20% of the course), during which you will gain invaluable knowledge and skills that will set you apart from others who have no work experience.
GCSE grade 4 or above in Maths, English and Science
Students who achieve this qualification could progress to the following, depending on their chosen occupational specialism:

You will choose a subject specialism which aims to get you ready to start a career in one of the following areas:
- supporting adult nursing teams
- supporting midwifery teams
- supporting mental health teams
- supporting the care of children and young people
- supporting therapy teams
- dental nursing
There is also some core content to learn, whichever career pathway you choose. You will develop a general understanding of health and science, including:
- working within the health and science sector
- health, safety and environmental regulations
- managing information and data
- principles of good scientific and clinical practice
- core science concepts including the structure of cells, tissues and large molecules, genetics, microbiology and immunology
You will also learn about topics specific to health, including:
- understanding the healthcare sector
- providing person-centred care
- supporting health and wellbeing
- further knowledge of both human anatomy and physiology and of diseases and disorders
- infection prevention and control
Assessment
The course is assessed in a variety of ways – you have to pass all elements to achieve the qualification.
- Work placement for 315 hours (you will be observed in your placement and you will complete a reflective journal)
- Technical qualification 80% (2 core exams and Employer-Set Project)
